History
of Presidents' Day
In April of 1968, President Dave Gourlay was hard at work negotiating
the inaugural Presidents' Day, then called "Greens
Chairman/Superintendent Day". This meeting was arranged for July 9th at
the
Richmond Hill Golf & Country Club. The day included a golf tournament
with a Superintendent/Chairman Team Cup and prizes. Guest speaker was
Tom Mascaro, President of West Point Products.
This meeting was one of the first of its kind to be arranged within our
Association, with a large turnout of Greens Chairmen. The theme of the
meeting was 'getting to know you'.
As the years progressed, the tournament name and structure was changed
to "President/Greens Chairman/Director/Superintendent Event", to include
executives from the member superintendent golf courses.
After holding an OGSA membership contest in 2001 to rename the event and
the trophy, that name was changed to "The Presidents' Day" and the
trophy was named "The William Sansom Trophy" after the OGSA's first
president, who held the position from 1924 to 1934.
This tournament has evolved through the years to what it is today: our
Association's most popular and prestigious event, promoting camaraderie
between team members and other teams. It is an opportunity to share
ideas between clubs and enjoy friendly competition. The day is also one
for the host club to showcase their course to their peers, fellow
superintendents, Presidents and General Managers.
